Many of our clients ask these questions:
-Is Shield Platform Encryption
-The same as Sandbox Data Masking?
-Will one do the job of the other?
-Which one is better?
It’s like asking: Do apples taste like oranges, or
Which one is better?
The answer is simple:
No, they are different.
These are two different tools for
Very different kind of
Salesforce data security requirements.
Data Masking:
Is useful when you
Want to make sure
That data in your sandboxes,
(Copied from your production)
Is not the same as the original.
So, any third-party/vendor
That has access to the sandbox
Do not see any type of data-
PII/PHI/other sensitive data.
Example:
It will convert, say,
Customers ‘Name’ field
From - 'Fred Smith'
To 'Tom Jones'.
So, it looks like real data,
but it isn't.
Thus,
Need for Data Masking:
Protecting your production data
Which is also available in sandboxes.
Benefits:
- Drastic reduction in risk of data breach/theft
- No accidental email blasts
- Compliance with Privacy laws made easy
Shield Platform Encryption:
It encrypts the data on disk,
But your users will always see
Exactly the same data as entered.
Example:
So Customers ‘Name’ field
'Mike Smith' remains
'Mike Smith'.
Need for Platform Encryption:
Mainly because of
- Contractual obligations,
- Regulatory requirements (Banking/Finance)
- Compliance with certain laws, or
- Internal/legal policies
Most of the above are dictated by
A clause/norm/rule which effectively states:
We will always encrypt the data
And also control the key.
Benefits:
- You can rotate your key
- You can have a hardware security module.
- High level of sophistication possible
Summary:
Both Data Masking and Shield encryption
Solve two very different problems.
Both are excellent choices
Basis the requirements.
