A lone swan is a rare thing. She either hadnt found a life partner yet, or even more tragically she lost her partner and he luckily found her vefore the hearbreak killed her.
Eithwr way she most likely imprinted on him as her new life partner.

The later vlups that show a signet in the background make me wonder if he adopted another swan or if she recognised that her mate was of another species and unable to give her babies, so found a mate to breed with, possibly somewhere away from home and then returned to lay her eggs.
