Part 1: Self drafting a 18th century corset! (1780's stays)

Follow along for a multi-part series making two 18th-century-inspired outfits. For part one I am making the stays! Stays are an undergarment that came before corsets and served the same function. They are the foundation of any historical outfit and will make sure I have the correct look.

I self-drafted this pattern based on photos of 1780's stays I found in the Met Museum and V&A online archives. I am proud of how well these turned out! As always, I tried to use materials I have lying around my house, all the fabric I had already in my stash. The only thing I bought was some twill tape and zip ties for boning.

Subscribe to see the other parts of this series! Next, I will be sewing an 18th-century day gown out of a gorgeous floral linen. Part 3 will be making an 18th-century evening gown based on a portrait in Dunster Castle!

✨ About me! ✨
I am a 19-year-old, self taught sewer from the UK. This channel was created to share my first love (sewing things from ballgowns and Tudor gowns, to jeans and up-cycling!) and my second love of videography and photography as a way of capturing the projects I create.

I also have run a dancewear business, Lillian Hope Designs since 2019, making unique dance skirts and other bits and bobs! I want to use this channel to document some of the behind-the-scenes of sewing and creating new products for this too!

Creating takes time so uploads will be sporadic (especially when you're a neurodiverse procrastinator like me!) but I hope you find something that sparks some joy and creativity in you here!

Hi Lilah! Great stuff what you do 😊 wanted to let you know that (you probably know this) is that Vivienne Westwood is amazing at making proper period based (but contemporary) fashion But; many of her earlier collections have really beautiful corsets in them. Bye !!
