That’s why I’ve progressed on guitar so slowly. I have books, dvds, magazines on what to play but without getting feedback from someone or playing in time it doesn’t aid you much.

Superb advice. Lessons to live by right there. Use your ear

This is the greatest advice. I need to hear the piece brought to life before I can play it. My ears need to register whether or not the pitch is high or low, or that perfect medium. Using your ear can help you improvise as well. If you know a note that could go well with the note you miss'd, then play it and just enjoy the music, but draw yourself back in. I play Violin too, and sheet music just throws me off. The process of reading it makes it feel like I'm chain'd up. I prefer just hearing music and figuring out which note was play'd.

My ears are the only way I can learn I play left handed strung right handed so everything I play is upside down. BTW, I can read and understand tabs instantly.
