I love Tesla but I can still acknowledge that this differentiation between Nio and Tesla has the potential to be monumental if battery technology evolves enough....that being said I’ve invested in both 😬.

Im intruiged to see where this goes, this seems like a cool idea and if Nio finds a way to make it cheap, it may be a good idea.

NIO is locked into battery swap now. They have sold the contracts and no going back as they have to service the need as it was a sales point advantage with the car.

Subscription model is always more expensive and it is not scalable at all.

Battery swapping sounds great to people who don’t have an EV. But those who do, know that when you need to charge, you already want to stop for a bit and take a break. It might be a good way to get people to buy an EV but I bet 95% of people who buy an ev for battery swapping never use the feature.

I like them, I wish they succeed as a company, with or without battery swapping :)

Nice! Thank you! I think cons > pros. Would work well for taxi business

Problem is not all people took care of their battery as good as other people do

I think the better use for this on a wide scale level is renting a larger battery. Like imagine if you get the base model of a car, then for a fee you can temporarily swap out your battery with a larger one for a trip, then go back to your old one.

The main point of battery swap is all the opportunities that come with it for NIO and the driver. For NIO, battery swap is a new industry that they are slowly capitalizing on - battery as a service for existing customers and eventually other ev manufacturers.

For the drivers:
They dont no have to worry about battery degradation/ range/bad batteries they can upgrade to latest battery tech any time. Meaning they wont get stuck with a useless car if their range requirement changes. To top it off the resale value of the car will stay strong.

Drivers can change to 70 kwh /100 kwh battery to purchase or rent.

Drivers have more battery charge flexibility. If You dont want to swap your battery then you can charge it at any other conventional charging infrastructure. Not everyone will swap batteries all the time.

Battery swap technology is constantly evolving and the technology is always improving. Just because its sophisticated does not mean that it cant be made simpler and more efficiently. In fact an additional 100+ version 2 swap stations are being rolled out .

This technology is huge and it is what sets NIO apart from all other EVs. Over 4-5 large financial institutions rate it positively.

I am guessing the obvious that was not mentioned, that the battery packs are recharged at these stations then reused. They do not need to stock many as 20 packs max can be rotated. It is more sensible and less cost than you make it sound. I am a fan, much better than waiting for charging.

Would it possible to do both? Tesla chargers for short distances and then on major roads that people often drive for thousands of miles have swapping stations? Tesla could charge more for the vehicle equipped to swap batteries and charge per swap on the battery. So for everyday use you charge at a charging station or at home, but if you travel long distances you pay to use the swapping station?

Still battery swap is attractive since people who do not like to swap battery could use supper chargers so reduce the load on battery swap stations. Since there are a lot demand for battery swap than supper charging, battery swap stations could obtain equal profit as supper charging stations.

The problem is that you need to have a lot of expensive batteries in store at each battery swap station. The company Better Place tried with the Renault Fluence Z.E. But failed and went bankrupt. Snow and frost makes huge problems for mechanical solutions.

I’m sure there are battery swap stations on every corner... Solid state batteries can recharge in five minutes...

I think all NIO cars are maid from aluminum, and I like battery swap technology change fast you will hav 600 miles range battery in no time and most people don’t drive more than 600 every 2 week, and they offer to rent battery which is good.

For what it's worth the Chinese government encourages battery swap as well. Specific rebates only apply to swappable e.v's

plz comment...BATTERY SWAPS PER DAY PER STATION
Now each battery swap takes 7 minutes [see you tube actual video Xi'an Diaries Vlog ]
60/7 per hour = 8.5 batteries per hour
Lets assume 6 am to 10 pm or 16 hours per day
16 hours x 8.5 swaps per hour = 136 batteries swapped per day per battery station
Now there are 131 stations so 131 x 136 total swaps per day
=max 17, 816 cars for all the stations per day
but there are 51, 000 cars on the road.
51000/17000=3.
This means that cars cannot be charged more than every 3 days.
If they make more than 51, 000 cars with the same number of batteries,
then you can only charge >3 days
If the battery robots break down easily then you can only charge >3 days
or if more than 13 cars need charging at a time,
then you have to wait while the 13 charge station batteries recharge
if 13 x 100 kw, then if all 13 batteries charge at the same time,
the station needs 1.3 megawatts at a time.
Note that fully charged tried it out. They were 2nd in the queue and the batteries were all empty of charge, so they came back in an hour and were able to swap their battery.
