I used to get those a lot when i was in my teens to early 20's. It will wake you from a dead sleep quick. My calf muscles would often be super sore and tender for days after one of those vicious muscle spasm cramps. Suddenly, the whole leg just draws up. Never rub it. It's so hard & flighty. I used to hold it tight to keep the mass from lunging around, and the fastest way to make it stop is to walk slowly, intentionally rolling your foot from heel to toe. This motion stretches the muscle. The rope thing would not work nearly as fast as walking it off. It seems impossible to walk, but it releives the spastic cramping more efficiently.
