He rented out his house and made enough money to rent a space where he could live and the extra money from renting out his house went towards a deposit for a new house. He realised that most houses are way bigger than we need and just something we get sucked into as a societal norm propagated by the banks. This idea that if you "bought" a home with a home loan, you've "made it" keeps the middleclass poor and the banks rich, because you are trapped in 25 years of debt.
