Dividing Polynomials and the Remainder Theorem Part 3

preview_player
Показать описание
This lesson shows how to divide a polynomial by a binomial using both long division and synthetic division. The lesson also discusses the Remainder Theorem and shows how to use it to find remainders in algebraic divisions. This is the conclusion of a three part lesson. This video was created for the MHF4U Advanced Functions course in the province of Ontario, Canada.

@EpicUltraKingSmizzy The remainder Theorem is only used for getting the remainder when a polynomial is divided by a binomial I have never seen it used for dividing by a trinomial. Having said that, I think you have an option. If you can factor your trinomial then divide one of the resulting binomials into the polynomial and then if we call the other trinomial factor x - a then find P(a) in the polynomial you get then you divide the original polynomial by one of the trinomial factors.

The 27 is the remainder when P(x) is divided by x + 2. That means when -2 (set x + 2 = 0 and solve for x) is substituted into P(x) then P(-2) = 27.
The second line could be simplified to 2k + 17 = 27. Subtracting 17 from both sides gives 2k = 10, and then k = 5.

@fastidiousprincess1 You are welcome, but I'd just do a Google search for "Dividing polynomials worksheets" and I'm sure you'll find lots.

I'm having trouble with a homework question where it asks for the remainder without division (remainder theorem) but the divisor is a trinomial not a binomial. What do i do?!?!

I'm soo confused how did you get 27? How can you add 2k + 17?? Please someone explain this to me I really need to know. My head is exploding here. Thanks
