What Kind of Singing Voice Do You Have? I think each and every one of us has a primal drive to discover who we are and where we fit in the world. For singers, this search for significance is often played out in the question, “What kind of voice do I have?”

Is it a rock voice, a jazz voice, a classical voice? Well in my professional experience the answer is quite simple…so over the next few minutes, I’m going to help you identify the type of voice that you have and what repertoire it might be best suited to.

You are such a great teacher. I am no hardcore singer, just sing casually with friends. I find your communication is fantastic, really appreciate how you structure your vids, your editing....well done sir!

I sing because I love it.
The genre I always gravitate to is rock/alternative, which I love. However I do like to challenge my voice with singing other genres from time to time, even if I do it just for the fun of it.

I tend to get very obsessed with a particular singer at any one time, and study how they sing/try to emulate them until I have a rough grasp of how they do what they do, or get bored of them and move on to another singer. They all tend to be within the genres I love best (rock, metal, goth, punk, alternative, synthpop), so these are the styles I have trained my voice to sing best.

This has led to me developing my own unique voice that has elements of my favourite singers but doesn't sound identical to any one of them. Sure, I can do a rough facsimile of them when required (sometimes without meaning to - for example it's quite challenging to sing a Placebo song without emulating Brian Molko!) but certainly when singing my own stuff I use my own voice, and I try to do the same when singing covers as well.

My current challenge is actually to get further out of my vocal comfort zone by using styles like classical, pop, and musical theatre to help develop my mix and head ranges. I have some skills in these areas built up singing my preferred styles, but I feel the genres I don't often gravitate to perhaps use these ranges more and in a way that I haven't yet entirely got my head around.

I naturally had a soft voice when singing, and despite being able to yell very loudly as a kid, I could never figure out how to sing loudly. Over the years, out of necessity to be able to help my worship group and also desiring to sing powerfully, I slowly taught myself to sing louder. I've also grown up with Christian music, some English and some spanish(with those good ol Hispanic styles). But I've found that while I will ALWAYS prefer songs with meaningful or melodies, I've also found that I love a great variety of genres of music, from something as gentle as a lullaby to hard rock. And I love that. I love being able to enjoy and try singing and pushing my boundaries with all the variety of music out there.

I find myself singing folk, blues and jazz... which is a kind of continuum in my view. One spills into the other. I'm drawn to both grittier, quirkier voices and voices that are smooth as silk. That said, I have a natural tendency to croon. Not quite as exaggerated but, yeah... Bing Crosby, Dean Martin. I'd love to credibly sing gospel but I don't know if it's a fit. Haven't quite found that full throated thing, even though I get close to in Blues. There are very few genres I don't enjoy actually. I even like classical "art songs". But folk, jazz, blues - or pop songs in those traditions - are where I first go.

I couldn't agree more. From a physiological perspective the vocal apparatus is basically the same between individuals. Most of what people think of their voice is actually learned.

But if we are talking about professional calibre aspirations, I think we need to be real and admit that for most singers, if you have been singing style X from the age of 5 to 25, then changing into style Y and being just as good may not always work out. It has been done, but wouldn't be something I'm betting a career on. After all, it is difficult to find a substitute for sheer time doing the thing, if that makes sense.

Blues and soul mostly. I grew up listening to old rock, especially Elvis. Right now, I've been singing a lot of oldies. When I close my eyes though, i picture singing soulful, blues inspired music. Like RagNBone Man, Aloe Blacc, Sam Cooke, Paul Williams from The Temptations, Marvin Gaye etc.. really powerful vocals. I've got a long ways to go but if I could pick, thats what I'd choose.

You are amazing! I asked my voice teacher the same question last week. I have performed a Mozart aria and song from Shenandoah. I am bringing an "unplugged" rock music book to my lesson today.

Well hey Dan, didn't know you had a matching CCM background to me and my musician brother...though we did listen to some light secular pop also (Carpenters, for example). My brother eventually went mainly jazz but still with strong AC influences; I'm not a musician but love to sing, mainly that means karaoke and it's mostly either AC or things like 90s "new country"...

I am a Contralto. I am drawn to melancholy, emotive expressive, torchy songs with a moderate to slow tempo that allows my rich voice to shine. I like to think my voice can move people to tears. my voice is naturally dark and thick. my favourite genre is invariably soul. second is Jazz and some pop. my voice sits low, so l sound best singing tunes geared for Tenor, Contralto and high Baritone

My issue is on the complete other extreme. Yes I sing for a living, yes I do many genres every night. Precisely because of my versatility in singing I have trouble finding my real voice without slipping up and sounding like the people I sing night in and night out.

This does give me more ideas on what to look for. I have been quite careful not to move my vocal practices forward until i found my sound. Been spending too many months trying to figure that out and what to feel.
Thank you for the tip. I need all i can get at this stage.

I grew up listening to Latino music and have written several songs in that genre, too. However I always wanted to singing classical music and when given the opportunity I took. I have been singing mostly sacred classical music for years and love it. Panis Angelicus is one of my favorite songs and sometimes I even get goose bumps in my skin. That songs really means a lot to me. Nonetheless, lately my heart is pulling back to Latino popular music as I want to do demos of my songs to have them published at my Soundcloud account. With the technics I learned during my classical singing classes, I feel better prepare to take this move.

I came across your channel by pure chance and have enjoyed every one of your videos. They are short, informative, and full of common sense, useful advice. Keep them coming. I have benefited a lot from them.

The truth is I sing because it's almost therapeutic when I get anxiety or feel depressed I start to play music and sing and it brings a great joy to me. I've sung jazz, musical theatre, r&b, and soul. Never tried another genre but would never be against it.
