How to Format a Screenplay

Today I'm looking at the rules of script format and asking how important are the rules? Can they be broken? And what should the main purpose of your screenplay be?

You have no idea how many people you're helping with this series.
Thanks a lot.

I learned more from this video than I have in 20 years of me trying to format my screenplays by simply reading other screenplays. Thank you Tyler :)

Damien Chazelle's screenplays (mainly Whiplash and La La Land) are also really interesting. He describes what is going through the characters minds, something that we can't see, and it makes so much more enjoyable.
Example, an action line from Whiplash:
"Andrew smiles. Nods. Finally -- unlike his uncles, his cousins,
even his father -- someone who gets it."
I love to read screenplays and think: "Oh yes, this is a Damien Chazelle/Quentin Tarantino/Aaron Sorkin screenplay alright".
Personally, I think writers should be free to leave their marks on screenplay, however they so desire.

Hey Tyler, you haven't made videos about "how to build your story's world" and "how to develop your character's backstory".
That would be very useful (It could also complete your playlist) !
Thank you for helping us !

Thanks for another upload! I just got hired to write a pitch and a few test scenes for an animated feature and if they like it, I they’ll bring me on to write the full screenplay. I wouldn’t have had the confidence to go for it as a freelance writer without your videos. I hope to join the Practical Screenwriting Class soon. Keep up the awesome work, Tyler!

Amazing video, Tyler. I have some things I want to share:
- I learned first hand that Word is not for scriptwriting.
- I started off with Celtx, then I graduated to Final Draft 11
- Thanks for the Studiobinder mention
- I just recently completed a strong first draft for a feature screenplay that I am satisfied with and I thank you for the helpful advice. :-)

My uncle onces said me that without a guru(mentor) you can't learn anything and you can't be anything and for me you are my guru(mentor). Thank you so much for teaching me and others about screenwriting cause Many other like me don't have much money to join some film schools or online course you are helping all of us. Thanks again ♥♥♥️.
I wish i could meet you one day and hug you. Thanks 🙏

It was great to have you explain all of these because I'm a self-taught filmmaker, and watching videos like this really help me to learn and grow as a filmmaker and scriptwriter, huge thanks, Ty! 🙌

Loved the various examples of scripts that were produced and explanations why they deviated from the norm. Well done.

Good work as always, Tyler. Understanding the rules is what it's about, not becoming a slave to them!
