In today's video, I lay out the 5 worst things about working in the public sector (a.k.a. for the government). While there are a lot of upsides, there are some pretty big negatives as well!

I have been a govt employee 17 years and i agree. Job satisfaction is almost non-existent. Most folks stay for the pensions and large amount of time off.

Yes! Promotions in local government are few and very far between. And they usually depend on favoritism, not merit.

The bureaucracy is hands down the most draining and detrimental thing that I have seen and experienced first hand. I was very naive to have thought that the warm welcome I received during my first week was a good sign but surely enough, just 2 months in and I started picking up on just how crazy it is. It's like working with a bunch of looney tunes on and off. It's ridiculous—and I think I would rather be in the private sector. I know both sectors have their politics and ways to navigate the org but my god have I never been in a worse environment than this one. Absolutely horrible.

I do agree with lack of vertical mobility. It is a game of seniority rather than ability which is frustrating and feel counterproductive. Many of those who have risen to superior positions have put in 10-20+ years on the minimum

You're also expected to treat politicos as royalty, ignoring policy and procedures for the kings and queens.Theres a very "shut up and do what they want" type of culture, and if you push back you are treated like you're a problem by your coward bosses. After 10 years of this nonsense I'm preparing my resignation.

100% accurate. Even county (local) government holds ALL of these characteristics and setbacks. It's enough to make you want to spread your wings elsewhere, since only the clipping of wings seems to occur the majority of the time in this realm of employment.

In Private sector you making money for someone else, and making them rich meanwhile rich buisness owners are finding many ways to cut pay in order to put more into their pockets. Goverment work, you work for community not profit.

another thing about working for the government: (if you are an IRS employee)
- if the government shuts down you are required to work without pay, and the ones who shut it down will still get paid
- you signed an agreement that you wont strike against the government
- you also signed you will not engage in protests or protest the government

I left my local county position as i was only part time and it was late night hours. I was cleaning park bathrooms and closing gates. It was also dangerous because of gangs, druggies and homeless. We were also very short staffed so it made it even more difficult. I was planning to transfer in a position that i wanted after my probation but it never opened back up again until many months later after i quit. I also applied for that position and now have an interview

Working for gov is good...once you turn 50! Lolz. Seriously tho. Sit there for ur last 10 yrs and get a decent pension.

I left my government go back to the private industry (technology). It is not private sector. It is the private industry

I've thought only in Indonesia things like this...
