Drip acclimation is an essential step when introducing shrimp to a new aquarium. Unlike fish, shrimp are incredibly sensitive to changes in water parameters, and sudden shifts in things like pH or temperature can cause serious stress—or worse. That’s where drip acclimation comes in, offering a slow and steady way to help them adjust.

In this video, we’ll cover why this method is so important, walk through the process step-by-step, and explain how it can set the stage for a healthy, thriving shrimp tank. Whether you’re new to shrimp keeping or already experienced, this process can make all the difference.

I do it almost exactly like you except I re-float their container to equalize the temperature before netting them out into their new home. Merry Christmas!

Thank you! It was nice to see more specifics on the method. I found that a turkey baster works as well as having to suck on the end of the tube. No more sucking on the tubes for me. lol!

Thank You, when a shrimp stops thinks about it then curl its tail under, is this just a cleaning process?

Is it normal for my shrimp to be very pale in a new tank? Or is it the temperature? (It's cold now)

My approach is using smallish containers for the drip acclimation as you do, but putting those containers inside a larger cassarole dish, tub, bucket, or whatever. I then simply allow the acclimation container to overflow. This pushes out and dilutes the old outside water, and gives me a LOT more time before Bad Things Happen should i get distracted.

Then, when acclimation is done, i can just pour the small container through a net into the larger container, then place the net full of shrimp into the tank.

Any mishaps that happen? The larger container limits spills, and a knocked over small container or slipping out drip tube? No problem. A shrimp climbs out of the literally overflowing small container? Its never happened, but even if it did, itd just end up in the larger container anyways so I'd just net it out.

I started taking this approach after getting distracted and overflowing containers, and trying to scoop water out of small contains but not harm the shrimp in them is hard. And if those small containers are near full, even if they arent overflowing yet, its REALLY easy to spill water everywhere when lifting and carrying them around.

Why this instead of just using a larger container (ig 5 gallon bucket)? Its a volume problem. Usually the baggie or whatever you got the shrimp in is small, and pouring it out into a large container spreads the water too shallowly. Also, its much easier to pour a small container through your net vs trying to scoop panicking shrimp out of a bucket. They are FAST critters.
