Sylvia's Christmas carol is one of Finland's most beloved Christmas carols
Originally Sylvia's Christmas carol is a poem by Zacharias Topelius published in 1853, and then composed by Collan as a Christmas carol.

The Sylvia ( Sulvia atricapilla) is a migratory bird that overwinters in Sicily, Italy. The poem is about the wonders of the south, such as cypresses and Mount Etna, but also about homesickness and love of the homeland.

Karl Collan (1828 - 1871) was a writer and translator, composer, and university librarian. Sylvia's Christmas carol is best known for his compositions. Collan was one of the most talented people in Finnish cultural life in the 19th century. His achievements are significant despite all the difficulties he has faced. He was orphaned early by his parents and had to support himself with no money through his school years. He died of cholera at the age of only 43, just as his life was at its best.
