How to actually FINISH your mix in GarageBand

You could write the best song in the world, but if you never finish the mix then only you and GarageBand get to hear your masterpiece... DON'T LET THIS BE THE CASE! Beat the nerves and actually FINISH your mix in GarageBand.

The headphones I LOVE:

'Comparison is the thief of joy'. 'This is how we grow.' Great advice, as ever, thank you Colin.

I do the same thing. I mix down rough mixes and iMessage them to my iPhone and listen to the mix on multiple sources such as the car, AirPods, Bluetooth headphones and will send messages back to my computer with mix notes.

Glad you took that up! It can be a maze that traps you. Just a little more, just that and that...THEN I'm done. Sure!
It kills the joy and even the creativity if we never complete our stuff. It doesn't have to be the best mix you ever done, just continue and the mix will be better. Don't let your creativity be stopped by anything. Don't struggle to long with one mix.

Great advice Colin!

I like the way you have edited this song. At first I thought it was too muddy. It has grown on me now.

Thanks for sharing this. This is basically the same process I was loosely following, except for the 'limit it to three sessions' part 😂. I'm definately going to implement that discipline this time around - great tip, Colin. I like this bit of wisdom I picked up in the journey: "Deadlines are there to give us peace and relief".

Thank you so much Colin! I found recognition in your advice, because I kept on tweaking and tweaking until I eventually ruined it.. while I only wanted my mix to be louder, yet not irritating on the ears. And what do I do? Tweaking until it got irritating on the ears 😫😂 I'm going to follow your advice and get over my perfectionism because there is no perfectionism! Thank u again! 🙏🏽✨

Great video Collin. I am also guilty of not knowing when it’s done. Great advice.

Great/helpful video. I find myself wanting to tweak my songs to death. Good advice to get a checklist and let it go.

Good advice, you need to draw a line in the sand at some point. (Line in the sand, thats a good song title :) )

VERY CHALLENGING. Feeling stuck between Mix and Master. Trying to wrap up my song but not turning out like I was hoping. Might have made some errors along the way. Put so much time into this thing. Live and learn I guess. Taking a break and hopefully have a fresh outlook later...

Great advice. I have a bad habit of making good the enemy of the great. Often, I'll keep tweaking until I'm sick to death of the song. (actually that's a good song title too)

Thanks for walking us through through this tough phase of ending the mixing process. Colin, can you please tell me what are those green coloured knobs at the left side of your VOX SLAP and VOX PLATE tracks?

Brilliant, been following your content closely, and it's absolutely amazing. Thank you! I've got a question: what levels do we set on the master volume knob. I notice that the master volume knob that appears on the displayed master track is different from the main master volume up at the top-right. What levels do we set for each of these? I'm a bit confused since I noticed that this volume knob doesn't affect the signal monitored by the plugins: mvmeter or Youlean loudness score.

Colin, I have listened to the Broke Royals record and I love it! Did you produce all your own stuff??

I'm so SO excited to watch your videos properly, I'm using garageband to record my first instrumental piece of music & your videos are going to be so helpful! I've also downloaded your 6-step checklist! Before I continue, because it's my first time recording/mixing a song properly instead of just EQ'ing guitars, are there any specific videos I should watch first? Thanks so much again for your videos! :D

How do you reference between music when you feel your music is to quiet? This is my process
I Import a song directly to GarageBand, from music folder. I turn down the reference track volume via the compression output (or whatever's available to decrease volume into the plugins.) Fader volume won't decrease 'gain'
So I level match with a gain plugin not faders. Is that OK?

I still have trouble dealing with a harsh sounding master when i compared it to a reference song of similar genre Any tips?

After exporting a 2-track mix and listening to it in my car, and on my home stereo, and am happy with it, how do I pull it back into GargaeBand to master it? It won't let me upload the 2-track that I exported as a Mp3 or as a WAV. I'm extremely new to this, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

The 1st minute has been my story. I've just wanted to make a drum cover, or even a decent sounding drum groove. I seem to get to a part I'm not happy with, and move on
