Episode #84
DR. SHASHI THAROOR: The Big Daddy of English Nuts.

In this episode, Dr. Tharoor introduces a ‘new’ word, revisits old favourites, talks about English words ‘looted’ from India, English words used uniquely in India, a Malayalam word that ought to be in English and so much more. Meanwhile, I introduce Dr. Tharoor to a ‘Benglish’ word and theorise that Indian English will take over the world.

The conversation with Dr.Tharoor was recorded months ago, but for various reasons – not the least of which is the pandemic – it did not see the light of day earlier.

In case you are new to The English Nut, I create weekly videos on the nuances of English. My objective is to introduce people to the finer points of the language while keeping them entertained.

English is nuts. And I’m nuts about English.

The English Nut is present on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter as well:

Core team on the Shashi Tharoor project: Priyank Bengali, Jay Morzaria

I swear ....
I didn't even look once at their faces right after introduction.
My vision & focus was right on the subtitles all the time.

The very British word Juggernaut, was a metaphor for something huge, massive and imposing. It was sourced from the sheer size of the Jaganath Temple at Puri, Orissa.

*How is it that even when Dr Tharoor speaks "normal'' English, it sounds so fancy?*

Whenever I hear Dr Tharoor speaking on topics other than politics, I'm like why this person is into politics! He's cut out to be an ideal professor in English literature and linguistics. It's not only because of his thorough knowledge of the language, but his verbal eloquence, his amazing way of explaining things, his wit, his good humour, and not to mention, that impeccable accent n pronunciation!

He's very friendly to his surroundings. Man, I'm going to follow him on social media just for his English. I guess hardly any person in the Parliament can speak English fluently. He must always represent India at any international meet.🙂

Dr Tharoor is always engaging, insightful and has that much coveted quality that is rare among politicians - he oozes charisma, although it appears that he is only lauded for it among a confined niche. Still, much kudos to The English Nut from a fan situated on the other side of the border.
