Wired for change: Southwire's vision for sustainable infrastructure
Показать описание
Recently, senior leaders from business, government, and the nonprofit sector gathered with Harvard Business School in Washington, D.C., to exchange views on the early successes, failures, and challenges of a major new slate of U.S. industrial policies. These conversations aimed to generate insights into policy design, implementation, and hurdles.
Hear from Burt Fealing: EVP, general counsel and chief sustainability officer at @Southwire as he discusses what Southwire is doing to take on decarbonization and sustainability.
Highlights from our interview with Fealing:
00:24: Southwire is a manufacturing company that makes electrical wire. Founded by a graduate of Georgia Tech, he wanted to bring electricity to his grandmother in rural Georgia. Southwire’s story is about what they can do to help others, help the electric grid and the infrastructure for bringing electricity to the U.S.
01:08: Is decarbonization an opportunity or a challenge for Southwire?
01:13: Decarbonization is a huge opportunity for Southwire. Going to an electric platform is much better for the environment. Southwire is the largest copper user in the United States. The company’s focus on carbon reduction is not only to innovate but also to decide if they can use the tools they’re already using more efficiently.
02:20: If we are going to make a difference, we must all come together. Can we take the necessary actions needed to reduce the carbon that is being emitted at the time?
02:39: Examples of success at Southwire.
02:43: Southwire is putting in wires to help manufacturing companies become more efficient. They’re also trying to help ports become more efficient in delivering the end product.
03:04: How does that affect profits? There has been an increase in demand for their products. But they then deploy that profit into innovations and how to improve society.
03:22: To think about stakeholders, means to have a very long view of what can be done to reduce carbon, help the planet, and be a good corporate citizen.
