“Historic moment” as NATO allies sign accession protocol for Finland, Sweden

NATO’s 30 allies signed an accession protocol for Finland and Sweden on Tuesday, allowing the two countries to join the military alliance once parliaments ratify the decision.

The signing, away from cameras, follows a deal with Turkey last weekend at the NATO Summit in Madrid, Spain, where Ankara lifted its veto on the Nordic membership bids following assurances from both countries that they will do more to fight terrorism.

“This is truly a historic moment,” said NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, marking the most significant expansion of the military alliance since the 1990’s.

The protocol means Helsinki and Stockholm can now participate in NATO meetings and have greater access to intelligence, but will not yet be protected by the NATO defence clause until ratification. That is expected to take about a year.

in comments i see lots of people who just fear ...and what :D i can tell if you think about the situation. Russia currently and in the future has even less opportunity to make any concrete moves that would start a wars agaist Finland . if they fired even one shot at Finland, it would start such a big war in Europe that Moscow would also have to be careful about living. Finland has played this joining NATO well. they already have such agreements with countries that there is a lot of common defense capability. As we can see, the Russians therefore do not make any moves or say threats regarding the war. Russia is unable to wage war against Sweden, Finland, Great Britain and other EU countries. There is a point in the EU agreement where it is also obliged to support other countries if they are attacked. So the talk about Russia attacking Finland is absurd and even Putin is not so stupid as to start such a big war when they can't even manage well in Ukraine
