There's really no more simpler way to describe it. First flats, then shadows to describe shapes, lit areas to describe volume and finally highlights to make it pop. Got it!

I really like how around the 15 min mark you mentioned that if you made it this far, you can be proud of yourself. That was really encouraging, and it makes it seem a little less scary because I don't feel like I have to achieve your end result in order to be proud of my work. Thank you :)

What I learned for the skin:
1) *[Layer1]* Flat color
2) Pick the flat color y move it on the color wheel a little bit to the red/pink and make it a little darker and more saturated
3) *[Layer2]* Paint the shadows looking at the reference
4) *[Layer3]* Pick an even darker color for round 2 of shadows and paint the darkest spots from the reference
5) Merge the two layers of shadows
6) Blend it a bit with a blender brush, but not too much, you don't want to get rid of the forms you've just created
7) Pick flat color and move it a little bit to the yellow and make it brighter
8) *[Layer4]* Do the lighting looking at the reference (do it like you hate it: fast, not stopping and not overthinking), it shouldn't take a long time
9) Blend it a bit
10) You did it :D

I feel like a lot of tutorials focus on doing different "short cut" techniques that the artists personally find easy. But they end up being confusing because of the amount of steps you need to take and how specific the techniques are. You kept this really simple and it's just layering. Thankyou so much for this. Made me feel less confused

Things to do in quarantine. Lot of time to practice 😅

also, change the reference (if you can) to black and grey. it'll help you see the darkest shades if you're having trouble

This was an INCREDIBLE guide. I’m still brand new to art at all, and this explained it so easily. It really clicked for me and I’m already seeing improvement in my work! Thank you so much for making this !

thank you so, very much for this real-time tutorial!! it's one of the few times i've seen someone upload without an incomprehensible time-lapse (as a total beginner at painting) and you even showed us how to avoid murky shadows!! 😭✨

thank you so much. I really appreciate artists that aren't afraid to share the rougher processes of their artworks.
