Jockey Richard Patrick produced one of the rides of the season at Hereford after he lost both irons aboard Fay Ce Que Voudrais in the Cazoo Mares’ Novices’ Handicap Hurdle, but still managed to record a two-and-a-half-length success over Crem Fresh.

“She is still learning. She had such a look around and ploughed through the last. Thank goodness I stayed on. I tried to shift my weight the other way. I managed to get the job done, anyway,” said Patrick.

I slowed the video down to .25% speed to try to see what happened. Horse took the jump too soon, and too flat, crashed it, causing rider to lose ONE stirrup. Because the stirrups are so high, it put the rider in a very precarious position with one leg tucked up under him, and the other hanging, pulling the center of balance off to his left. Rider made a heroic effort to heave his weight up off the saddle enough to free his right foot from the stirrup, which allowed him drop his right leg, recover his balance and basically ride out the end of the race as if he was bareback. Excellent recovery, and any good rider should be able to ride that way. Horse felt legs on her sides where she wasn't used to them, balance recovered, allowed her to step on the gas. Remarkable ride.

"Its all a bit John Wayne late on" best commentary ever!

Maybe that's how horses really want to be ridden, it seemed to respond instantly when that happened.

A lost stirrup can be tricky. Been there, done that. Super recovery. Kudos to horse and rider.

Can someone explain to me why these horses seem to be so small? At first I thought it was a pony race, but saw the riders were adults, not kids

Of course the mare raced on with the jockey's legs down her rib cage. He had got much more drive through them and she just shot off.

Good recovery; most of them fall at that stage.

I don't see any John Wayne in this, that's not at all the riding he does in that movie, he rode with both hands flashing guns and bridle in his teeth, this is just a good ride, not a John Wayne ride :(

The first 3:55 was the most boring race calling I've ever heard. Skip to 3:55 for the good stuff and to hear an actual emotion out of the announcer.

It's just like when Forest Gump broke out of his leg braces.
