Summertime - George Gershwin - Acoustic Fingerstyle Cover

George Gershwin’s classic jazz piece, Summertime, composed in 1934, originally featured in the 1935 opera, Porgy and Bess. There’s been lots of different versions over the years, all looking to capture that dreamlike, soothing feel of the original, and there’s something magical I think in listening to those very early recordings.. check out the mesmerising Billie Holiday recording in 1936, full of background hiss & noise - close your eyes and go back in time… And compare that to my personal favourite, the velvety smooth Lana Del Ray cover from 2020. Over 80 years between the two covers, Gershwin mastered a genuine timeless classic. Anyway, hope you enjoy my take on it, with the footage in the video switching from bright colours to hazy black & white being my nod to the songs enduring heritage.
