This is the alternate ending. The ending I saw has him escape the room after it's set on fire and after recovering writes his story. At first his wife doesn't believe him but then he plays the recorder and it has their daughters voice on it from the hotel incident proving it all did happen. I like that ending better.

This was one of the more terrifying movies I've ever seen... it helps if you understand it's an allegory for addiction. Like a self-made prison where others try to reach you, but can't, and you're tormented by your own demons.

I remember a different ending... The firefighters save him from the room, then he and his wife live together, believing the whole event to be a hallucination. The protagonist writes a book about it and finally checks the package containing his dictaphone. He plays the recording together with his wife and you can actually hear his daughter.

Funny thing is, the first time I watched this, it was the ending in which he was able to survive and wrote the story. Then some years have passed and this movie came to mind and watched it again, not realizing I was watching a different ending that time, I didn't mind it and thought to myself maybe I really just remembered the movie differently during the first watch. Then I came across this and read the comments, realizing it really has two endings.

There are four endings to this film. In addition to the ending that appears in the theatrical release (also the default ending of the DVD), three other alternative endings were shot. The incentive for this was based on the director's belief that King's intention, in his original short story, was to leave the conclusion ambiguous. None of the four endings matches the ending of King's original short story.

Damn, thats not how I remembered it ending! I remember him making it out with his wife, the wife doubted his story but glad he survived the hotel fire, but he plays the burnt recorder and they both hear the voice of his daughter come out together before the credits roll.

Yoooo!!! Noooo!!! even this version of the ending didn't end they way you describe it. In the end he's ghost is in the room, yeah, but then his daughter's voice calls to him then he answers and follows the voice OUT OF THE ROOM! He didn't survive in this version of the film, but his ghost wasn't trapped in the room either. Watch Out and Take care

It's not that it's unsettling, it's that the hotel layout doesn't make sense. He left the lift, walked around a single corner, and wound up back at the elevator.

It's like the room is giving him a chance to escape.
