Collision of two equal-sized bodies (SPH simulation)

Показать описание
Off-center collision of two 1000km objects at ~600m/s. The simulation shows about 34 hours.

Computed with OpenSPH

The oscillations at the beginning of your sim would cause problems for a planetary collision. Typically we let them form and “rest” for upwards of 2 simulated days independently and then insert them into the collision simulation.

Could you write something in the description about what exactly is being simulated here (size / mass / velocity of the objects)? :)

The final body had such a fast rotation that material on it's surface was basically orbiting. If this were 3D, the body would have an oval shape as centrifugal force tries to pull it apart.

This is how real life objects perform the fusion dance.

Why was this animation so pleasing to watch

Would be fun to color code the particles at the end depending on where they are, and then rewind to see where they came from

it's like the universe being formed, and all the different tiny galaxies and systems born around it. Incredible

its funny to think that back in the day any astronomer with enough money for a telescope or the skill to build one would have to calculate so many things in order to just picture what "such an event" would have been like...
nowadays its like .... computer doo brrr with two objects...

It kind of looks like two planets colliding to make a even bigger planet and a ring (cool)

The final shape the collision took was similar to yin and yang ☯️

I like to think that the recent aftermath of a collision like this is the only place in nature you would find anything resembling the "asteroid fields" we see in sci-fi movies and tv shows -- a chaotic, tumbling mess.

This really shows the shapes of galaxies are just snapshots in cosmic collisions

So if we're talking about rocky planets, they would instantly liquify and continue merging as mass of mostly liquid matter? I wonder how planetary differentiation would turn out on such a body.

Love how it looks like the tropical storm animated icon at some points

reminds me of how the solar system was probably made. A big object in the center and a cloud orbiting it. Those clouds will condense into asteroids and proto-planets, and eventually become the stable orbits of planets.

Beautiful and amazing planetary collision course also what are the planets collided like now

Fun fact: If you watch the video and you focus your vision at the center uninterrupted, without closing your eyes, when the video finishes the image will look as if it were moving backwards

I can't wait until this can be simulated and rendered properly to look real

Ooooh so thats where the rotation comes from
