Let’s Do This! Join Me in Empowering Bread for the World

I’m really proud to help empower Bread for the World with this fundraiser. Remember, rather than charity, this is advocacy — advocating for smart government policies that help struggling and hungry communities, both in the US and abroad, to work hard and succeed.

While I’m excited about Bread’s work from a “love thy neighbor” point of view, I’d like to point out to people for whom hunger and desperation, out of sight, isn’t an issue that this is a national security issue, too. When we help our poor succeed (with, for example, better nutrition for children in their first 1,000 days), they are better able to contribute to society, and our nation grows stronger. And when we help other countries build their economies (with, for example, technologies that help their people become healthier, and therefore better able to learn, work, and take care of their environment), the world becomes more stable — and America becomes safer.

Rick I’ve got to say, not only are you a great travel guide, but such a generous and caring man. You supporting to end hunger makes me a bigger fan of you. Keep up the good work with your generosity and traveling.

This is fantastic. Growing up in the Northwest, I've always known about Rick Steves. Though, I never realized HOW close to my backyard he was (I live about 15-20 north of Edmonds). I spend a lot of time on the computer for work these days, which has led me to having YouTube playing in my headphones daily. Being someone who loves to travel more than...just about anything...but does so very little (finances), I started listening to the various videos here on his channel. In doing so, I have learned more about what Rick stands for. What he does to help spread messages of love, open-mindedness, and positivity around the world. And I have to say, I couldn't be more of a fan of him and his company. I wish I knew what I know now before I had taken my trip to Europe in 2016! Though, one of the people I went with, now my wife, did a bang up job on planning it, I feel I would have more of an edge now.I'm a paycheck to paycheck kind of person at the moment. Currently a Union guy just shy of 3 1/2 years in a certain company here in the PNW. So, if ya know how that all works, you know where someone would be at this point in their career. Now, that is not a complaint. Though I have been far better off, financially speaking, in my life, I have also spent plenty of time as a "starving artist" living in a vehicle with little to eat and no home to go to. So I understand a little of how important these programs can be. My time spent living on things like bananas, carrots, bread, was - in part - due to my own choices. However, one of those choices lead me to being able to go with a group to the jungles of Peru, working as a photographer with a non-profit group to document medical students and doctors helping in various villages away from any major cities. Some of these villages could be found going through garbage dumps. No power. No clean water. So much I could say about my time there, but this is already far too long. Point it, it was life changing.
Long story short, I will gladly support any cause someone like Rick feels he can stand behind. Tomorrow is payday, and I will do what I can to help this cause.
For now...back to the grind of clicking keys and checking numbers. 2 hours down. 8 more to go.

I admire your desire to help those less fortunate! I do have concerns however on trying to entrust or expect the government to feed everyone. My family immigrated to America from the former Soviet Union and all I can say is that they (government) promise free bread but they take much much more than they give. In the end, you end up with no bread and no freedom. We came to America extremely poor and never went hungry a single day here. The American people are incredibly generous and we are so grateful. I try to give back now to charity to help other people just like we were helped back in the day. ❤️

I admire you trying to help hungry people but I would actually prefer you to be supporting a charity that would empower people rather than empowering government. I firmly believe that it is not the role of government to help people but for us to help our fellow man. I would consider donating to a charity that directly helps people, ideally to improve their ability to be self-sustaining than merely to feed them, but I won’t support an organization that simply pushes for yet another government solution. Ultimately, government isn’t the answer - collectively, we are.
