Microsoft Surface Laptop Studio: what the what?

Microsoft just unveiled its new Surface Laptop Studio. It's a successor to the detachable-screen surface book and features a new hinge, improved processors, and a 120Hz refresh rate display. Pricing starts at $1,599 and includes 16GB of RAM, an 11th gen Intel Core i5 processor with Iris Xe graphics, and 256GB of SSD storage.

That cooling solution actually seems to be done really well. Yes, it looks a little strange, but the function is more important than the form here.

It doesn't look strangle at all. It looks amazing and aesthetically pleasing. A major advantage of this one over other regular laptops is you can sit this on your lap without worrying about blocking any ventholes usually found at the back of the laptop.

Anyone that's complaining about it being "too bulky" doesn't know that this is actually a massive positive for this laptop. The fact that it has a dedicated area like that for airflow means that it'll actually be able to fully take advantage of its hardware and not bottleneck to temperatures like practically every other laptop out there. That "feature" alone has me very interested in this product.

It's practical, it's elegant and it's top-notch quality. It's something Surface users had expected for a long long time. But the Verge, as it always does, goes "meeeh" while a new Apple watch color will make them go "Yaaaay!!". It's amazing Surface devices sell so well despite the Mac-medias open hostility towards them.

You know how sometimes in reviews they stack different devices on top of one another to compare the sizes. That’s how the studio laptop looks in studio mode all by itself.

I kinda like the "plinth" for one reason: I often use a laptop on my bed without anything underneath it and most laptops get choked when their vents are on the bottom, here they're on the sides so it would get better airflow. I don't know if that fringe use case is worth buying it, but it's different for sure. I get the impression this is really designed for desk/table usable though.

I'm a fan of the big risk in changing a design. I'll take weird any day of the week over the legion of Macbook clones.

this design is so much more practical than the 360-folding design. i have an hp360, because that's the best i could afford. and i love this thing for all the things it can do for such a small price, but i must frequently switch between taking notes with my HP pen and typing something in between. and it's a great PITA lifting my whole computer and bringing it back to normal mode. it also worries me i might damage the screen someday if i am in a hurry to fold the laptop.

I like the idea and the design of it. I used my SB2 a lot to take notes in University, and I would have loved this design to quickly switch between studio mode for pen writing and regular typing mode. De- and attaching the screen everytime I quickly wanted to type something just took too long.

Verge's comments about Microsoft products sick me, it is always intended to contradict. But when it's Apple products, only compliments even with the lack of creativity in them. I think it's wrong to have preferences in this job.

Microsoft is not targeting university students with this. This is for creators and the checkboxes are ticked. Just coz apple won't do touch based laptops, can't throw tantrums on those who do. 😅

I absolutely love the architectural brutalist building esque design of this things. It looks as if someone shrunk a secret but very important building down to that size. The specs are a bit meh, but all else is wonderful about this device
