Don't worry about it, I love Birmingham and will back it to the hilt and it drives me mad these people that talk rubbish about Birmingham and have never been to Birmingham and only look at it on a 3 minute video.

I was born there and lived in Birmingham for 11 years. Granted it was a long time ago and thought it was safe. At the same token I have friends who still live there over 50 years and have never complained about feeling in danger. Sh&t happens everywhere it about being alert and smart when you go out.

1. Our canals, Brindley Place or any canal tours
2. Soho House
3. The Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery
4. Symphony Hall
5. The Jewellery Quarter
...would be my alternative top 5.
If you're going to include Dudley and Drayton Manor, you may as well stretch to Lichfield, Stratford-upon-avon and Warwick Castle
Birmingham is also the birthplace of tennis, the home of the formulisation of football, the scene of the greatest test match and highest ever individual score in cricket and (if you're going to include Dudley and Drayton Manor) the neck of the woods where William Webb Ellis picked up the ball and ran.
Oh...and the Royal Ballet...

It is safer than most people say in the comments. The media exaggerates it.

Stayed in Birmingham for 6 weeks two years ago and liked the people I met. All were polite and friendly. I didn't realise it is not a safe city :). I think it's not the same when you permanently live there

Birmingham's water mate is some of the best in the country, it is of the soft water type having come from Central Wales supplied from a set of Dams specially built by Birmingham City Council in the 1800's in Elan Valley Central wales where it still comes from today.

Birmingham always gets a bad rap for some reason, but its actually one of the very best places in all of the UK. Extremely beautiful and huge city centre, and the nightlife is legendary. Foreigners aren't even aware of it even though its the 2nd city to London.

I lived behind Aston Villa football clubs until I was 15. When I tell people I’m from England they automatically assume London. Really sad because Birmingham is such a great city.

I once use to visit Birmingham at least twice year in the summer and near Xmas to do some shopping and have some relaxing nights dining out. But last year my wife and I nearly had our lives cut short. Won't go into too much detail because this could have happened in alot of cities across the UK. But what I will say its not the place it once was, and we found ourselves constantly looking over our shoulders. The atmosphere has certainly taken a dive and the city centre is full of undesirables to say the least. My brother was standing outside a kebab shop last year when a gang of youths pulled up and threatened him at gunpoint for his phone naturally he handed it over. The next day as he was leaving the town centre he was caught in traffic lights between 2 gangs hacking each other with machetes ! It's a pity really because I have very good memories of Birmingham, but fortunately I'm lucky to be here to still have those wonderful memories!

I see from the comments that some have pointed out that much of what is in Birmingham has been missed and some of what is just outside included, so I'll add something else that is not quite Birmingham but near as damn it and that's the Black Country Museum and you could also mention the West Midlands Safari park and at a push Ironbridge Gorge.
