Functional safety is part of the overall safety of a system or piece of equipment that depends on automatic protection.
This automatic protection system needs to respond correctly to its inputs. And it should have predictable responses to failure
IEC 61508 is the umbrella safety standard. It covers electric, electronic, and programmable electronic safety-related systems.
The basic standard for functional safety is IEC 61508, which encompasses electrical, electronic and programmable electronic safety-related systems.
The standard for functional safety in process industry is IEC 61511.
IEC 61511 is derived from IEC 61508) defines requirements regarding the application and implementation of these safety instrumented systems (SIS) in the process industry.
It has various safety integrity levels - SIL1, SIL2, SIL3
SIL 3 Provides the highest level of protection
and, SIL 1 Provides the lowest level of protection
What is inherent safety ?
A process has inherent safety if it has a low level of danger even if things go wrong
The stems from British chemical engineer Trevor Kletz.
You can learn more about it from @USCSB . (It is by far one of the best when it comes to recommendation on safety practices)
Inherent safety has four methods commonly used Minimize, Substitute, Moderate, Minimize, Simplify
