The unholy alliance of Shiv Sena-Congress and NCP in Maharashtra is proving quite expensive when it comes to manage difficult situations like the ‘medical emergency’ in the wake of dreaded Covid-19 pandemic handling.
Maharashtra is now emerged as the worst affected state of Covid-19 as the death toll in that state alone had 211 with more than 3,500 people tested positive of the pandemic so far. As if this was not enough, even 53 out of 170 journalists were also tested Covid-19 positive, creating further panic.
Udhav Thackeray-led Aghadi government, thus far, appears miserably failed in handling the situation, resulting in putting the whole nation at risk.
More so, the state’s capital Mumbai also happens to be the nation’s financial hub.
Whether the NCP-Congress has trapped the Udhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena or the vice-versa of the latter, it is now clear to the people of Maharashtra that they are up for trouble with the Aghadi government. It is not also proved beyond doubt in Indian politics that contradicting ideological tie-ups may provide a stable government though they may have numbers, but cannot last long.
This was proved beyond doubt in Jammu and Kashmir in the recent past. Such alliances even at national level on several occasions in the past proved disastrous to Include: Janata Party and later Janata Dal or non-Congress and non-BJP alliances headed by Moraji Desai, Charan Singh, VP Singh, Chandrasekharar, I K Gujaral and Deve Gowda.
In that backdrop, the Shiv Sena’s hunger for power to capture power in Maharashtra by hook-or-crook has proved yet again how dangerous are such unholy alliances. Shiv Sena’s hardcore Hindutva and strong nationalism character has been buried deep in the Arabian Sea due to the hunger of Udhav Thackeray. He almost is held singly responsible for liquidating the party in Maharashtra politics in times to come, which was built with ages of hard work by Bala Saab Thackeray. Bala Saab was also known as Tiger by the hardcore regional Marathi chauvinists.
What will happen next none in Maharashtra know, where the Covid-19 has threatened to engulf the state like wild fire? And the Aghadi government headed by Thackeray doesn’t know how to handle with the non-cooperation of the NCP-Cong which are bounded by the ‘vote bank’ and appeasement politics.
What should Centre do under these circumstances? Should the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre allow politics to take its own course and let Maharashtra suffer or act tough? How far and how strong? Is the million dollar question one continues to ponder, till some respite is restored in Maharashtra and nation’s business capital Mumbai? That’s for sure.
