Shanks is pretty overrated. Yes he is a yonko and yes he stopped the the war however his overall strength is not yet known maybe aside from his swordsmanship which was described by mihawk. We aint entirely sure and gildarts had some pretty amazing feats already like defeating bluenote and easily crushed a black hole and fought acnologia and even fought August. Gildarts literally destroys everything in his path to the point where the entire city has to be rennovated.

Gildarts top strong honestly. He outscales shanks in every category. Gildarts would scale higher than human form dragon gods and even the dark dragon slayer knights. Natsu can casually one shot large star level beings even back in the eclipse celestial spirit arc. Same arc that showed MFTL+ speed scaling for Fairy Tail with redlight. Tartaros also has MFTL+ scaling with Galaxia Blade that base Mard Geer could react to, and he in his Etherious form got speedblitzed by Dragon Force Natsu using Dragon Slayer Secret Art Crimson Lotus: Phoenix Blade. Gildarts scales much higher than current Natsu even in his Fire Dragon King Mode. The only version of Natsu that probably scales higher than Gildarts is probably Dragon Force.
