Practiced shooting my bedroom today with the lights off. Bracketed 3 photos. Actually looks pretty good.

I am a novice real estate photographer and videographer after working as a TV and news cameraman for almost twenty years. There's definitely a split among RE photographers on this subject. I prefer the lights on and doors open but many prefer the opposite. It's all personal preference mostly based on people's editing skill level and how much or little time they want to spend in post.

I still struggle getting good results, lost a lot of customers. White Balance issues and exposure issues. I'll try this next time.

I always shoot lights off, then shoot a single frame with lights on exposing for the lights only. Do your HDR, luminosity masking etc. then create a layer stack in Photoshop and set the lights-on layer to "screen" and this way you can adjust color or brightness independently of the other layers and use masking to keep the light fixtures from creating those ugly patterns on the ceiling. This also keeps color temperature and exposure differences in check. If youre not using layer stacks in Photoshop, your missing an important way to take your photography to the next level.
