This video reenacts what it was like to join the Roman legion. The process included passing a physical test, proving one's age, citizenship, and character. Following the inspection and other tests, the recruits are now required to take a Roman soldier's oath before the local commander.

I solemnly swear to grab the blunt end of this metal thing and use the pointy end against Rome’s enemies.

Even Roman Legionaries had to pay for their own gear I am glad to see some things never change lol

At least the new Roman recruits aren’t spending their sign-on bonus on a new chariot marked at 30% APR.

Reminds me of when I enlisted in the US Army. All of your misc uniform and hygiene items were provided to you out of a pay advance.

Reminds me of the 18th century British army recruiting drive. The recruiting Sargent parades around the country offering a generous bounty, it’s drinking and wa-hoo every night on the way to the barracks. Once you get there the cost of your drinks and food is deducted from the bounty!
When rock bands got a record contract and went on tour using posh hotels, drinking and updated wa-hoos, little did they know that the cost of this high life came out of their contract.

Lol somethings never change when i enlisted in the navy i saw that out of my first pay check my uniform and gear came out to be 800 bucks. But you get paid while in training. Regardless, i felt robbed.

You fight in the army.
That's bad!
But you get paid.
That's good!
But you buy your own gear.
That's bad!
And you can not avoid death for the emparah.
THAT'S GOOD!

Considering the absurd number of Roman civil wars and coups, im not sure loyalty was one of their values

There are phases to the Romans.

#1 The founding of Roma, surrounded by the Italian Tribes and Greek Colonies. 700BC

#2 The rise of the Roman Republic, dropping the hoplite style and adapting the legion style of warfare from their wars with the Samnites to the South. 400BC

#3 The Roman Republic starts to become an Empire after the Punic Wars and Macedonian Wars 200BC

#4 The Marian reforms, this was the era Julius Caesar was from 60BC

#5 The Imperial stage, where the famous Lorica Segmentata comes from, Rome now being a vast empire 1AD

#6 The time of Aurelian (different equipment, but right before the time when Rome started to downgrade it's military equipment) 250AD

#7 The Barbarian and Hunnic invasions, when Rome started to finally fall to pieces and fragments, never to be restored again, during the time of Belisarius and Justinian 400AD - 600AD

#8 All the Roman kingdoms such as the Byzantines, the beginning of the Medieval Age. 900AD

I was hoping to hear some form of Roman values presented in the oath similar to modern military oaths but it seems their only values were loyalty and service

Civil war was common when loyalties were primarily to their commanding officers,
