Everybody is missing THIS about John Piper's Comments!!! | John MacArthur, Shepherd's Conference

John Piper made some ridiculous comments at the recent Shepherd's Conference held at Grace Community Church. Many have wondered why John MacArthur continues to invite John Piper to the conference. John Piper preached twice at John MacArthur's Shepherd's Conference and made some bizarre statements. In this video, I discuss the basis for his statements, play a clip that provides context, deal with the passages he referenced and include something from a Question and Answer session with John MacArthur. And this is the reason why we should be reading our Bibles and not watching so many sermons, again, nothing wrong with watching sermons because I watch sermons obviously lol, but our main source is the sword of the spirit which is the word of God 🙏🏼✝️🙌🏼⚔️👑💯🙋🏻‍♀️♥️

When I was saved, more than 40 years ago now, I had a dramatic God experience that at the time I didn’t even have the words to correctly define. I had lived a debauched life up to that point and understood eroticism well, but I do recollect one of my first thoughts, after this thoroughly cleansing and transforming experience, was that up to that point I had had no idea what “Joy” was, and now I knew. John Piper will never convince me that you can equate Joy in Christ with eroticism, I don’t care how hard he tries to spin it.

People hates Dr Piper because they never understood the context of why he is using those terms. Thank you for showing this. Still love his sermon very much. We obey God because we want to, because we enjoy it. A lot of haters are waiting for the pastors they hate to say some words, and then they can catch them and say "Ahah, gotcha! " and then post it online to make it viral, hoping to make people never to listen to them ever ever ever again. Just like what most people did to Pastor Begg. I love Todd Friel's comment, podcast should not be above pulpit. Whether Dr MacArthur should invite Dr Piper to the pulpit, that should be discussed among the local church, among the Grace Community Church, it is not to be determined by most of podcast.

Joy is not the mere sensation of pleasure — it is a pervasive, constant, and unending sense of well-being that flows from vision, peace, righteousness, and hope. True joy is robust — even including outright hilarity! We can experience the joy of being in God’s kingdom even in the midst of suffering and loss.

Hi! If you are upset about Piper's using the word, "eros" in this preaching context, Piper's followers are easily reminded of the four different types of loves C. S. Lewis explained in His "Four Loves": Affection (storge), Friendship (philia), Romantic (eros) and Charity (agape). In Piper's sermon here, the romantic love ("eros") means the love of wanting something far more excellent than the one who loves that draws his/her heart passionately to, while in our modern English in our modern culture, "eros" only means sexual lust, which Piper never meant here in this sermon. The reason that Piper brought up the word "eros" here is that he wanted to clarify that God is the ultimate object of our passionate "wanting/pursuing" love. Regular listeners of Piper soon end up detecting many C. S. Lewis' materials in Piper's God-centered, never worldly, theology.

Pipers point was to convey pleasure in the love similar to the longing of erotic love. Not that the desire itself was erotic. If you rewatch the clip, his emphasis was on the pleasure (joy) aspect of our love.

I have read other text from European writers who use the word eros in a similar context between the love of men. Not sexual (although that is the popular context), but pleasurable and desirable.

It's strange to me too. But I try to consider what he was trying to convey with his meaning, rather than how offended I am at his choice of wording.

Pastors preach every week using words not found in the NT. We speak an entirely different language. I think the question is whether your words are faithful to the text. Not if they can be found in a word search.

There is no need to romanticize God's love. Jesus died NOT in a romanticized love for God! He made the ultimate sacrifice in true love for God. Agape is why we are born from above, converted in Christ and spirit filled. How I feel is irrelevant! Piper is trying to make it seem that the ultimate goal for Christians should be that elusive feeling of "love" - Eros. Nah! Feelings are fickle.

I was at Lake Ave Church when Ray Ortlund Sr was discipling John Piper when Piper was at Fuller Seminary. I have seen too many compromises with the Gospel Coalition. I agree, we need to distance ourselves from heretical pastors in the TGC. I believe MacArthur should have not only asked Begg not to come, but Piper too!

Because of Piper's connection to the Coalition, the Shepherds conference should not platform him. Hopefully they will see the error of this choice of speakers.

Actually eros does show up in the Bible. The Septuagint uses it in the Song of Solomon, which is a book - much to the discomfort of many - primarily speaking about Christ & His Bride.

32:05 Jesus did what He did out of love for His Father and for us, willingly and sacrificially. Hebrews 12:2 says that "for the joy set before Him, He endured the cross." The joy, obviously, was not in the pain, sorrow, and suffering He experienced. It was, rather, in the accomplishment ('It is finished!') of our redemption and fulfillment of God's will.

I believe much of this teaching leads into the growing one world religion of the 'Universal Christ' of moral therapeutic deism... The 'Happy God' of Piper.... Which changes 'God is love' into 'love is god'
Our 'passionate pursuit' of this happy god deflects the simplicity of simply loving Him by obedience to His commands. We love him because He first Loved us and laid down His life for us! Jesus said if we love Him, we will obey His commands.... And in doing that comes the fruit of the spirit! His yoke is easy and burden light, yet it is in this submission to His Word in obedience that or joy may be full!

Piper cannot find adequate words to express his love for God. I so wish my love for my Heavenly Father came close but sadly not within a country mile. I am not offended by his words. Would that i could love Him more.

I am quite fond of John Piper's sermons but this particular sermon really is something so hedonistic and heresy. For Piper to refer to joy in the scriptures he mentioned as erotic is just way off the mark and a misinterpretation of the Gospel. I pray he will realize that mistake and publicly apologize and remorse for that. He's probably forced by the influence of the sensual culture to say something like that. I know he is better than that. He's a human being like all of us and needs Gods grace and forgiveness.

Piper seems to push "breakthrough" thoughts often.. Look at his books abouit "Pleasure" I have no idea how he was accepted as a "buddy" to the Reformed guys."
