For those who don’t know, the following is how ships are sunk as artificial reefs: A $1million ship(purchased as scrap) is scrubbed of all chemicals, fuels, paints, plastics and valuable metals like copper and lead and stainless steel. Engines and electronics are removed.Hatches are strategically cut to allow pathways for water flow to prevent stagnant pockets that can trap/kill wildlife. Ship is sunk with floats or bags to keep the vessel oriented as desired. This process usually costs about 3 times the value of the metals contained in the ship. The above is an actual cost for a artificial reef in San Diego, California 10 years ago. Maybe this is why ships are sent to other countries for disposal. Out of sight, out of mind.

And yet I'm the one getting blamed for polluting the planet with my little 4 cylinder daily driver. If that makes any sense.

''can't dismantle it due to heavy metal pollution''

''let's sink it, that would help the marine life''

This is why I throw all my car batteries in the ocean, to help build new ecosystems for the dead fish

So these abandoned ships that are considered toxic with the paints, deteriorating metals, plastics, alloys, the fuel, oil and other tanks that hold hazardous, toxic and dangerous chemicals and just the sheer massive size of these behemoths are causing some serious hazardous waste because the rich owners won’t honestly do the right things to minimize their effects on the environment! How about holding the rich owners accountable for the irresponsible and irreversible damages they intentionally do for once?!

A country banning any kind of shipbreaking in their borders is both shortsighted and hypocritical.

We're not polluting the oceans with plastic, we're just helping dolphins and turtles find a new source of microplastic food.

The ocean is the best place to get rid of truck loads of car batteries and bodies..

Coral reefs are another reason why I believe glass should be brought back to popularity & plastic bottles be banned.

It might sound dumb. But if you empty the ship from everything including heavy metal it will only create rust which isnt polluting. Rust is iron oxide, and iron oxide is naturally occurring, and it's everywhere. The earth is largely composed of it.

The cost of buying a new ship should include its ultimate disposal.
