An optimization problem is an application of calculus to a physical where we want to make a certain quantity as large or as small as possible. The most difficult step is modelling: transform the "word problem" into a math problem of the form "find the max/min of this function on this domain".

I believe there is a mistake. The surface area S of the box should be represented by the equation 2x^2+4xy, not x^2+4xy
