👏 👏 👏 YES!! As a licensed esthetician and former Ulta employee I used to try to tell people all the time that preserves are NECESSARY! Who wants rotten skincare?! “Clean beauty” is such a scam❤

I felt something when you said “clean beauty is a lie”, I felt happy that you’re dedicating a whole video to this topic because I couldn’t agree more.

FYI Lab Muffin is publishing a science beauty book. I think there are a lot promises and snake oil products entwined in the history of cosmetics. I want preservatives in my cosmetics.

What sad is that people do not research these subjects on their own. Unfortunately, it's not just makeup but food as well. Jen, everybody should become an ingredient nerd.

I was stopped at the mall yesterday twice by people trying to sell me skincare. one tried to rub something on my under eyes because it has "collagen." I stopped her right away, first she didn't wash her hands and second I know that collagen on the skin does nothing more than a moisturizer. I walked away so fast yelling about molecule size 😅. Thank you for sharing your nerd-ness with me!

Companies probably want to be against preservatives because if a thing goes bad quickly, you have to repurchase it sooner. I bet we will see more companies do this....

I never liked clean beauty. I live in the Philippines. It's humid as flying fck here. And ever since my favorite local brands decided they wanna go for paraben free, clean beauty, their palettes never lasted me 10 months. They always start smelling like mold on the 5th month, and growing actual molds on the 6th. The lip glosses starts smelling rancid on the 6th month no matter how careful I am. Don't even get me started on the high end and imported clem beauty brands.

THAT is how a proper video is done!

No guessing, subjective interpretation or blabbering…facts!
Presented in easily digestible form!

And a very important topic for that!
Best wishes ❤

I have said this for so not all chemicals are bad and not all natural/organic stuff is good . Remember no preservatives and stabilizers means shorter shelf life and with that comes the how often do we discard things right on time of the use by or expired date? Your videos are much appreciated thank you Jen.

Honestly I actively avoid anything labeled clean. I don’t like how quickly they get weird, my face is so sensitive so I can tell quickly. I had a concealer and foundation from a “fantastic clean beauty brand” and they went bad within a month. They smelled off, consistency noticeably changed. I went to return them and the sephora employees were grossed out as well. A previous month they were pushing that brand but stopped because pretty much anything purchased was getting returned. The manager was frustrated, not with the customers but just the overall brand and apparently asked to have it removed from their store.

Arent parabens are the most highly researched preservatives in the world?
It irritates me when the clean beauty community fearmongers people into believing these additives are bad.
Another thing im dubious about is 'no artificial frangrances' in skincare. This doesnt mean there is no fragrance. Sometimes there are essential oils added instead, which can be more irritating than artficial fragrances in the first place.

The audio sounds amazing! It was the first thing I noticed! You KNOW I love this video topic!!! The major clean product that kills me is mascara. People use them way past the 3 month mark even when they're not clean formulas. Bacteria-laden or moldy mascaras (or eyeliners, etc) can cause everything from watery eyes to severe eye infections. And it seems like right now all of our beloved products are slowly being reformulated to be cleaner. Great job!! 👏

I fell into ‘clean beauty’ before it was even called that. With severe eczema & products doctors recommended only making it worse, ‘natural products’ made sense as a solution. It’s honestly been scary trying to get out of that headspace. All I knew before ‘natural skincare’ was pretty much the worst eczema possible. I’m grateful to have found something that made my skin manageable, not better, but manageable. But I’m sad that I promoted inaccurate information, that I missed out on potentially better products & probably made my skin worse at times, using old products that were poorly preserved. I have always thought of myself as someone who likes science & evidence based practice. But still I fell for all of this for so long.

Thanks for sharing all of this. I think the bacteria & mould side of things would have made me think twice, sooner. It’s really good to see people speaking about all of this. I’ve found it really helpful to watch lab muffin beauty science & some of the dermatologists on here.

Arsenic and nightshade are natural too, just sayin'. Not everything "natural" is good for you. I tend to use some things that say they're "clean" or "natural" only because some of them are less likely to cause me irritation with my incredibly sensitive skin. I try to buy cruelty free, but ingredients-wise, I just go by what works for my skin. Paula's Choice is my favorite skincare because of ingredients that work for my skin without ANY irritation. Youth For the People is another one I love.

Forgot to mention, I’m 70 years old and love makeup/skincare. Last year I got my first stye, went to my Opthamologist and she said to use a warm compress several times a day and it would go away. I went home and threw out my mascaras and eye liners. A month later I got another one, it also went away. I few months later I got another one that formed a small hard cyst looking little ball, she injected it with a steroid that dissolved it. I immediately went home and threw out any old eye shadow pallets and anything else that would come near my eyes. I disinfected my remaining newer pallets. I’ve been pretty good at keeping my brushes clean, I would wash them all once a week. Now I clean my eye brushes after every use. Knock on wood, I’ve not gotten another one and I still use a warm compress everyday. That’s another reason I don’t use an eye shadow with glitters, they get into your eye duct from fallout. After what I went through I try my best to stay away from them.❤

I have been saying it since it started. I want preservatives. I can't use the blushes ect. with the fuzzy tops. Too many chances for infection and contamination. I wash my brushes after each use. I toss my Beauty Blender often. I also spray my eyeshadow palettes with alcohol. Mad love. So glad you spoke up.❌️⭕️

This is so true!! A worker at Sephora led me to buy a Kosas foundation and at first it was fine. Less than a year later it was starting to give me a rash and my face was swollen!! This was before the expiration date, too.

Great video!
I hate the clean beauty marketing because it feels like an insult to my intelligence as a consumer.
I wish they would bring back parabens. I actually have a bad reaction to phenoxyethanol so I went from having skin that was not sensitive at all to having to really limit what I can, I can’t use!
