The Safety Share: Leveraging Diversity to Improve Safety

In this sixth episode of #TheSafetyShare, sponsored by Equinox Gold, we will be discussing how health and safety performance can be improved by fostering an inclusive, diverse and equitable working environment.

Our industry has made significant progress over the past several decades in significantly reducing serious injuries and fatalities. However, our collective progress has plateaued in recent years, indicating that we still have a long way to go to achieve our collective mission of zero lives lost and zero lives harmed by an occupational illness or injury. Our panel of guest speakers for this episode have firsthand lived experiences of being an outsider in a new workplace filled with hazards and risks that could result in a serious injury or fatality when critical controls aren’t known or in place. Our conversation will focus on where our industry was, where it is currently, and where it’s going as new people from all over the world continue to join the Canadian mining workforce, bringing their own cultural backgrounds, social constructs, and experiences to their new teams.

Join our guest speakers Cathy Mulroy, author of “My View from the Blackened Rocks: A Woman's Battle for Equality and Respect in Canada's Mining Industry,” Theresa Nyabeze, chair of CIM's Diversity Inclusion Advisory Commitee, and John Doyle, of SolutionStream, to be a part of an open discussion on how Canadian miners can leverage diversity, equity and inclusion to improve health and safety performance in our mines and processing plants.
