What do you want money to buy you? And what is something you've bought that brings you absolute joy? Discuss!

your story in the beginning illustrated to me how much our caregivers' money habits influence our own behaviours around money. I've seen my mum tracking her (household) spending on paper as long as i can remember and as soon as my allowance turned from weekly to monthly around 12 years old i started doing it too! ive moved to tracking it digitally but i'm essentially still doing the same thing my mother modelled for me back in the day!

Does "dog" count as an item? Because that's the one thing I spend way to much money on... and worth every penny <3

I can totally relate to “shopping with mom every weekend”. She always shopped for deals, but definitely had a shopping problem. She would hide things from my dad. When I got out of college, I “shopped for fun” too. No more! I love Craigslist, consignment shops, and love to swap houses for vacation. I’m slowly becoming a minimalist, frugal person and it feels great!

Planting seeds and growing flowers and food brings me joy every day. Money spent on my garden is the best money I’ve spent. I bought a new outdoor pot yesterday and asked myself “how long will I appreciate this pot?” The answer was likely more than 10 years.

Well delivered. I especially like the empathy and understanding and no judgment mentality offering new perspectives to consider.

When I was younger, Mom and I went to Target and bought popcorn then walked around the store looking at the items. We couldn't afford to buy anything from Target besides splurging on some popcorn. It was probably one of my best memories with my mom.

I switched from buying a flat of water bottles to buying gallons and filling a bottle.

Tip # 30 for saving your money, a good thing to have today would be an emergency fund in case unexpected things happen.

Question 5 changed my LIFE. I work minimum wage service jobs mostly as I'm studying (which all suck in my experience) and I REFUSE to buy anything that forces me to go back there with regret. Also a solid diet tip. Ice cream is a half hour of work and it's just not worth it to me.

I've usually done the things you talk about...naturally. Somehow, I just knew to do them. It must have come from listening to and watching my parents and grandparents. My grandparents raised their small children through the Great Depression and teenagers through WW11. And, of course their children were my parents. Frugality was in their bones and they passed that onto me. As a teenager, I bore it with extreme angst. As an adult, I realized its value.

When I was young, I wanted to go to an expensive private college. I can still hear my dad's response in my ears, "I can get you the same education for a fifth of the cost!" And, he did. When I bought my house and started incurring large expenses, I heard that same phrase running around inside my head. I started pricing basement water proofing. I had no idea what it cost, but when I saw the costs, I just knew it was too much. "I can get the same thing for a fifth of the cost, " kept running around in my head...so I waited and kept cost comparing until I found a company, with a good reputation, who did it for a lot less. (I've never actually gotten to the "fifth of the cost, " but I've gotten close.) Same thing with glass block windows in the basement, refinishing whole house wood floors, etc. I saved thousands.

Speaking of savings, some 30 years ago, I wanted to go to the Holy Land. I saved for three years to be able to go, via France. I spent two weeks in each place...trip of a lifetime!! I did not charge it. I just wasn't going till I had the money. That was in the pre-digital camera era. I took so many pictures that when I got home, it cost $1000 to develop the film! Now those photo albums are one of my great joys, because they put me right back on that trip when I look at them! Worth every penny!! In the rest of my life, I wait, price compare, do without, use what I have, etc. Right now, my main sinking fund is for a down sizing move I'm getting ready to make.

I love to listen to your frugal, sensible ways! I'm so glad for you that you taught yourself to be financially savvy. You did it...and now you're in a position to help and teach so many more people! Congratulations, Sarah! You've done such a wonderful thing!! Keep up the good work, my dear! (As if you need me to tell you that...!)

Love to you and your two legged/four legged family members! ❤

I love this video. I'm going to make a cheat sheet for my wallet to ensure I'm asking myself these questions when I shop.
I've been decluttering throughout February and the biggest thing I've realised us that many items should never have been purchased in the first place.

Love this!! Wish this video came out earlier in my debt free journey. Haha. I have 3k left should be done by my birthday next month. I am an emotional shopper and buy the stupidest things that I never ever use, however this last year made me really open my eyes. My bf (well ex now) smoked and 2 packs end up being $18 every few days which i picked up a few times (never doing that again) and so I started my sinking funds for something I really wanted even when I should be paying off debt. I really wanted a cartier ring but at 3k that's crazy!! But why not I've already spent $35k on random crap over the years. I put my "I'm not smoking fund away every week and at the end of December I had over 2k to buy preloved and authentic haha" did I need it? No. However did I love it, does it make me happy and do I wear it every day? Yes. It's not even an item people would notice so it's not a flashy "hey look she's wearing an expensive ring" but it was something I worked hard for, appreciated and it made me realize I can have stuff I love if I just think about it first. I also surprised myself when I didn't go out and spend a ton when my 3 yr relationship ended. I really wanted to but I knew once I started, all of the work I did paying off my debts would set me back and I would just hate myself for it. I'm glad I found your channel last year and hope you're safe.

Minimalism to me is synonymous with intentionality. And to me, it seems that you are being intentional. Being intentional about how you live your life, the items you bring into it, the way you choose to spend your money and plan your goals.
Thanks for the video, was enjoyable to watch. :)

I remember when I was single and the 3 questions I would ask before buying anything. 1) Do I need it? 2) Can I afford it? 3) Finally do I want to move it or inconvience someone to help me move it? Now my bother didn't know I had these rules when he offered to come help me move into my apt when I moved from Washington to Oregon. He came over and was mentally thinking ugh this is going to be hours of work. We open up the back of the Uhaul and he does a double take and goes this is all of it. I was all yep. With a big grin he was all well damn sis I'll have this done in no time and can still enjoy my Saturday!.

Great questions! Even the best of us need to hit PAUSE and think a moment, make sure we're on the right track with our purchases.
