In this video, Dr. Webb talks about a kyphoplasty procedure for patients with osteporotic vertebral compression fractures.

About us:
Our Fracture Prevention Clinic at South Texas Spinal Clinic provides compassionate and timely treatment for patients with osteoporosis.

We are a team of 2 spine surgeons (Dr. Walt Simmons and Dr. Antonio Webb) and a Fracture Liaison Certified Specialist (Annette Gantz, NP-C) who loves helping patients understand their bone health by taking time to explain specific bone diseases and risks.

The Fracture Prevention Clinic also educates patients on how to prevent bone problems before a fracture occurs in addition to managing medications that may be needed to maintain bone health after a fracture.

Most patients are treated without surgery. Those patients who need surgery may be offered an outpatient procedure, called a kyphoplasty.

What is a kyphoplasty?
Kyphoplasty is a 30-minute minimally invasive outpatient surgery used to treat spinal compression fractures. Compression fractures usually occur in the chest region of the spine or in the low back, in areas weakened by osteoporosis. To help reduce pain from these fractures, a small needle followed by a ballon are inserted into the fractured bone. This is followed by cement. The goals of the procedure are to reduce pain from the fracture, restore the natural height of the vertebrae, and ensure stability.

Who is the perfect patient for a kyphoplasty?
Patients with confirmed osteoporosis who have a recent osteoporotic fracture are ideal candidates, because the more recent the fracture has occurred, the more likely it is able to have its height restored.
Patients with pain from an osteoporotic fracture: if you are known to have an osteoporotic fracture and have pain at that level, restoring height and fixing the broken vertebral body may relieve the pain.

I had this done after losing a lot of bone density after steriod use to combat GvHD. I was very nervous as this was the first time I've ever had a broken bone (let alone 6 which is how many vertibraes I had fractured). my surgeon was probably one of the best in the world at this precedure and he made me feel very safe and comfortable as I went into surgery. I had never had a doctor take so much time to get to know me and ask me exactly what I was nervous about so he could explain the process in the most accurate and least intimidating way possible.

I had a Kyphoplasty done 2 weeks ago for a compressed fracture of the L4 vertebra with 10% disc height loss. I was basically pain free immediately following the procedure, but a bit sore. I am now pain free.

Dr Webb is absolutely right! I had an L1 compression fracture. I was in constant pain until I had kyphoplasty yesterday. When I woke up, I walked off of that bed without pain! For me it felt like magic but for Dr Webb I’m sure it felt more like many years of medical school and experience! Thank you!

Thank you! I just had the kyphoplasty yesterday and was aware enough to feel a striking motion against my spine which alarmed me, and also hurt. I didn't get a chance to ask about it but I see here the tapping of needles into the bone which explains it. Whew! I was so curious, and not in a good way.

I had just finally healed from an L5 compression fracture exactly 5 months ago. Then last Friday i fractured my L2 vertebrae. CT confirmed osteoporosis but also received basically a demand not a recommendation for Dex scan. I'm 51. My mom had osteoporosis and i never knew until i asked my dad if it is in our family history. I wish she would have told me before she passed away in March. Kyphoplasty sounds amazing. I cant keep doing this.

Thanks for posting the video. I think this is the best explanation I’ve heard for this procedure. The only odd thing is that I’ve mostly seen pain management physicians doing these, which is fine, but I’ve always wondered why neurosurgeons don’t do them more often. I’ve always considered you guys the specialists when it comes to anything to do with my spine.

I was in a car single accident back in 2009, where it was pouring rain and my car hit a pot hole and I hydroplaned off the highway and hit multiple trees and my little bmw convertible cut in half and had to get it out by the jaws of life. By the Grace of God, I made it out to the ambulance where I was taken to the nearest hospital. I remember thinking, “is this it?” I had 30 upper body fractures and was so blessed not to be paralyzed. I was in the hospital for about a month, and some found it way too early as I was home and one of the first nights my chest filled with fluid and I had to have that fluid removed with no anesthesia, as it was an emergency situation. If I would have fallen asleep that night, I don’t think I would have woken up. It’s such a blessing to have doctors such as yourself that give a somewhat insight approach to certain patients circumstances and the best way to treat it. Here I am today, rocking heels and living life. Although, the older I get, I notice my back symptoms getting worse in terms of vertigo sensations, numbness/tingling and overall just weakened. I’m not one to pop a Tylenol whenever I’m in pain, as I have an extremely high pain tolerance. My question to you is, when is the time to maybe get surgery (also, it became clear in 2009, that I had scoliosis which was never seen as I was a child. My curve was around 30 or so….but prior to the accident, my spine was completely normal in my eyes. What’s your opinion on treatment for this? I went to a chiropractor and to be honest, I think it only made it worse.

This was freaking awesome! Thanks for the video! It makes great content to think about how all of this works, what is the payment plans, who should not get this procedure, and if there is any way to improve it. So many questions. Thanks once again, it is very exciting.

I'm in hospital right now waiting for this. I'm already fused from t5 to t11. Fractured t6-t8 a week ago. So incredibly painful.
