We learned a technique called dimensional analysis in a chemistry class.   The idea is you write out the problem with what you want on the left and what you have on the right and then you set your ratios/conversion factors up with the units you don't want on the bottom, so with the map problem you put the inches on the bottom.  Then you multiply it out.   It's works well when you have a bunch of conversions you need to do which is often the case in chemistry.  You can lay it all out and make sure it's right and then do the math.   The units cancel out top and bottom the same way numbers would, like if you had 2x2 divided by 2x3, that's the same as 2 divided by 3.

?miles=6inches 25miles/1.25 inches

?oz cleaner=gallon water   128oz water/gallon water  1oz cleaner/3oz water
