In this video, I explore the topic of teaching kids to code. Do you think we should do it, and if so, how?
I have included many follow-along activities you can do with your kids today.

Games mentioned:

Montessori Material (Great for sensory learning- touch Mathematics before reading and writing it)

Gameschooling

Learn to code courses:

Ages 13+

YouTube, Udemy, and Coursera have a wealth of courses where you can learn any programming language or concepts. When you want to advance your learnings, try building projects in the real world. Get internships or make websites/apps for local businesses or for solving your own problems. The sky is the limit when you learn how to code.

Amazing Aparna! I'm so glad u mentioned nature play. Interaction with nature elements is so incredibly important for all human beings. Lets just kids play outdoors is the key to so many problems in current life. Your coding guidance is also very valuable. Thank you so much .

Thank you Aparna. I love your videos. I am partially homeschooling my 7 year old boy and 10 year old girl in Seattle. I am not an IT professional. I am terribly confused about the various fields and classes offered for kids …programming, coding, Java, python, robotics, AI, etc. I don’t know which one to start with. And how they are connected to each other. Will be great if you can make a video about various IT related options/classes available for kids. I don’t know which class to start. My kids are generally interested. Also, how do you teach the kids the basics of hardware and software like what is a cpu, what is an operating system, what is World Wide Web, what are cookies (that cookies thing comes up every time my kids go on a website), how internet and wife works, etc. I just feel like nobody talks about these important basic concepts before talking about higher level programming things. Also what do you think of Blockly? It is screen based so I don’t like it but it is so popular so I bought it. Do you think it is effective?

Aparna, I watched up to the end of the bubble sort example. I don’t completely agree with this approach. The child will say that they can visually see which beaded strings are smaller and should be in the first place. The child has Actual Intelligence to solve this problem with less number of steps than the bubble sort method. They will think that coding is dumb and be discouraged from coding. We know that at the transistor level, computers are dumb. At that level, computers cannot multiply. Multiplication for computers is a series of additions. Kids will think ‘how dumb’. Now that I know my multiplication tables, why am I adding numbers to multiply.
Have your kids pushed back on learning to code? Do they know that at the lowest level, computers are dumb?
But, overall, thanks very much for sharing your approach. It got me thinking about how to teach coding to young kids.
