U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris formally unveiled Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate on Tuesday, choosing the affable longtime politician who Democrats hope will keep newfound party unity alive as election day approaches.

The two appeared together at a Philadelphia, Pa., rally on Tuesday evening.
Walz told the crowd in Pennsylvania that violent crime was up under former U.S. president Donald Trump, adding that was “not even counting the crimes he committed.”

The Minnesota governor took aim at Trump and his running mate J.D. Vance, characterizing the pair as “creepy” and “weird as hell” while expressing an eagerness to debate Vance.
Walz has contrasted himself against Vance, who studied at Yale and, he said, had “his career funded by Silicon Valley billionaires.”

Walz, 60, is a military veteran and union supporter who helped enact an ambitious Democratic agenda for his state, including sweeping protections for abortion rights and generous aid to families.
