Sailing When We Never Thought We Could

Our 469 mile passage across the Sulu Sea has been an unexpected challenge. Because these border line doldrum, never-above-10-knots-of-wind days are putting CURIOSITY to the test.

We wanted a boat that would sail on the days we never could before (light wind).  And surprisingly, we've been able to keep a decent pace on days we didn't think we would be able to sail at all (only 5-8 knots of wind).  Which has made this whole passage with compromised engines, a lot less stressful.

We haven't talked much about performance, our sails or general setup yet. Mostly because we've been waiting until we had used everything (more than once).  And we have been using every single sail we have. Sometimes, all in one day.

So, if you're ready for a deep dive into CURIOSITY'S sail plan, how it compares to our old boat and what we feel we're missing…this one is for you.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. A couple of explorers, modern-day documentarians, and cultivators of curiosity.

We’ve been chasing our curiosity around the world on wheels and keels since 2011. Why? Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. The more we let our curiosity lead the way, the more we discover about ourselves and the world around us.

Things We're Most Curious About...

GETTING OFF-GRID
Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. So self-reliance and sustainable living are a must. We've learned heaps about renewable energy, managing waste, creating safe drinking water and foraging for food. We carefully manage our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so.

TALKING TO STRANGERS
People are busy (even on remote islands) and travelers are a dime a dozen. It takes time to talk to strangers, and even more time to have a real connection. Going the extra mile to get to know someone is a commitment.

Which is why these are our most treasured experiences. Setting off into the world with curiosity as our guide and nature as our compass. We talk to strangers and accept hospitality without fear or reservations. Both giving and receiving.

ALTERNATIVE LIVING
These are people who are doing things differently. Forgoing the mainstream, seeking freedom and living on the margins. Creative, unique and inspiring people who challenge our ideas of home and community.

Our journey is ever-evolving but the mission remains the same: #CultivateCuriosity

It’s too fast Wynns! 18 minutes just flies by when enjoying these videos. Love learning about everything on the boat and specifically the sails this time. The computers and robots making the sails at Doyle really is an incredibly cool sight. Great video

I am impressed with the way you two can stay upbeat during trying times. That is an asset not all of us have. Happy travels.

Please yes :P Do a whole video just about reefing. It's oddly one of my favorite things about sailing. I just installed a reefing kit on my little boat and I love to use it in higher winds.

Who would have thought that this landlocked sea sick inclined person would find sails and their construction so interesting. Thank you for your storytelling

I don't know anything about sailing but I enjoy Nikki telling me things that go over my head, thanks

What would we do without Tech? Well, I can remember the days of searching for a pay phone, in the middle of nowhere, that ended up not working, and/or not having the correct change! Love the boat! Love the sails! Love you guys!

Nikki you're a great commentator, I could listen to your voice all day, Jason has an infectious smile!

Really enjoy videos explaining key items aboard Curiosity. The look at Doyle's plant was startling -- no more sailmakers crawling around the floor marking and cutting fabric, no more sailmakers running yards of fabric through sewing machines.

Go team! May the wind be at your back and your coffee strong. Love you!

I was quite intrigued by your jumper/shorts. Looks like precisely the right thing especially for where you’re wearing it and what you’re doing. Does what it is supposed to do yet loosely comfortable.

Great to see you getting to use all your sails. Looks like you are getting into the grove. Hopefully you can get all your warranty work done. Of course as soon as you do something else will break. Boat life got to love it, you guys have the right attitude to enjoy the ride. You guys have come such a long way since growing up in Texas.

FLIR has been a game changer for us especially since we came down the ICW sometimes while at night.

So I just started watching this video. But I have to say that I was told a long time ago that Sailing is the most expensive way to go from A to point B for free. Glad you two are having a good time.

We became a subscriber just a few weeks ago. We started seeing your Fiji & Tonga vlog series. It was so interesting to see the time dates during the Pandemic lockdown & compare it to what we went through during that time period.

We don't see ourselves getting a sailboat, but it inspires us to go on the road. Our goal is to be full time "road warriors" in two years.

Your videos gives us a glimpse of what our life can be leaving our jobs & traveling full time. 😊

I would recommend a forward looking infrared camera (FLIR) on the mast. It is a game changer for night sailing.

Your perseverance and courage are truly inspiring; you ventured into sailing even when it seemed impossible. Your determination and spirit show that with heart and effort, anything can be achieved. And I am Floating Village Life.

Hi, my two favorite YouTube channel. Love everyone of your videos. You two rock.
I was on YouTube & saw two videos about AG1 & its co-founder. I don't know a whole lot about them because I can't use their products due to medication interference, but I thought you all would do everything you could to investigate the matter since you all are smarter than me in matters like this & your viewers deserve the TRUTH. Plus, you two are fantastic detectives & can find out the truth in this matter or @ least make up your minds about WTH is going on with AG1 & tell your wonderful viewers the "HONEST" truth about their products. You @ least owe that to us viewers. Please!
I believe in you two & "TRUST" you wholeheartedly. I believe your whole viewers feel the same. That's why we watch you every Sunday & I look forward to your videos every week. As soon as I get home from church, you're the 1st thing I watch.
I just want your opinion on/about AG1. $100.00 a month is a lot of money to spend on something that's not going to do me a lot of good.
I appreciate you two a lot & I trust your two opinions on your sponsorships.
Have a safe & wonderful travel, my friends,
Chris from Missouri
