trombone vs trumpet: silly solo contest

Copland wrote "with humor" in both the trumpet and trombone solo in Buckaroo Holiday. Little did he know that two Texas kids going to Yale would make a competition to see who can play their solo the silliest. I'll let the comment section decide who won :).

Shania if you're reading this, you're pretty cool despite having gone to Texas Tech. Hook'em Horns!!

Both were fantastic technically and expressively, but for this silly quirky goofy little contest I gotta go with those silly quirky goofy little bone glisses

This is so cool!! It’s so rare to see musicians really just taking it out of the box in a professional orchestral performance no less! We need more of this in our field

This is a tie. You were both supremely confident and practiced exquisite craftsmanship. (I _am_ biased toward the 'bone, though, which is I'm here).

What we should admire here is the clear mutual respect between competitors. The nods of appreciation of each other's gratuitous silliness, the wry smiles at the other's musical and theatrical achievements, the furtive glances, all done whilst making sure they don't cause them to screw up their playing. Surely the conductor knew this was afoot and should be applauded for not intervening in the spirit of good, clean competition.

I'm going for a tie - the delivery of the tromboning was exquisite such that anyone glancing in that direction would have no choice but to crack up. But the trumpet had it musically, going out of their way to try to out-trombone the trombone with their tuning slide, to the delight of everyone listening.

11/10 for both

The audience definitely won this one - they got 2 incredibly fun well-performed solos to listen to!

both of them sound great but nothing beats trombone

Both are so amazing!! I can't possibly choose. It's crazy how much difference it makes to see musicians having fun and really ENJOYING their playing, it's exhilarating and thrilling to watch/hear. But sadly often gets lost in the search for technical perfection. You both nailed that so so well!!

musically, it's a tie – the way you sat down just narrowly pushed me over to team trombone :D

Great playing. The whole clip I was thinking: Is that Yale? I recognized the wall paper!

Yale, class of 1994

This is honestly my favorite video that I’ve seen all year, and saying I’ve seen a lot would be an understatement. Kudos to you and your band for having a great time while bringing so much enjoyment to others!

😆 Who better to play the silly trombone than Timo? You both were brilliant, you both won.
