Gunnery Sergeant Charles F. Hoffman of the US Marine Corps, had just reached his company’s objective on Hill 142, near Chateau-Thierry in France. Suddenly, he saw 12 of the enemy crawling towards his group with machine guns. He gave the alarm and, immediately after, rushed to the detachment, killing two men with his bayonet and forcing the others to abandon their guns and flee. For his quick action, initiative, and courage, he received both the Army and the Navy Medal of Honor.
