I've personally really grown to like wide, high-volume 29" tires. In my region theres many trails with loose over hardpack surfaces and a 2.6" wide tire helps enourmously with traction on such terrain.

I've done 27.5, 27.5+, and 29. 29 is faster, and more fun on straighter, less winding paths. 27.5 is faster, and more fun on winding, tight turn paths. 27.5+ is the perfect compromise between the two, and what I ride the most.

Interesting comparison. I'm mostly a roadie, and went from an early 2000s Marlin hardtail with XTR, to a Farley 9.6. As I start to get more into trail riding, I've started researching 29ers. As of now I'm looking at hardtail 29ers.
Re the 29" back and 27.5" front tire, I seem to remember Trek having a model with a 29" back and a 26" front tire. I don't remember the model name though.

29er for me. At 6'2" & 225lbs, anything smaller feels like a toy.

How much smaller is the 27.5+ than 29?

For me jumping on 27ers is much easier than on a 29er. But im 6'4 so riding a 29er is more comfortable overall.
