SAP System Architecture Overview - SAP NetWeaver - Ana Lekic SAP

The SAP NetWeaver Application Server ABAP is the foundation of the SAP NetWeaver platform. SAP NetWeaver is an integrated technology platform and is the technical foundation for all SAP applications, for example the SAP ERP and R/3 respectivly.

SAP NetWeaver Application Server follows the Client-Server-Principle, in which presentation, application processing and data management are physically separated.

There is the typical 3 tier architecture, which makes the system more scalable because each layer is a separate system. Not only for performances reasons, but for security as well.
Here is the typical architecture of the NetWeaver application server ABAP.

The topmost layer is the user interface. This presentation layer user can access directly.

The application server is where all central processing gets done. It coordinates and controls the application. It also moves data from the two surrounding layers.

The bottom layer is the database layer. Here all data is stored. There is a so called relational database management system (RDBMS) which manages and controls everthing what is going on in the database.
