There was another version I read when I was younger where yes Medusa was still raped by Posideon but Athena actually made her a gorgon to protect her and give her power rather then punishing her for something out of her control. I like this version more because it would make sense that the goddess of wisdom gives power instead of punishment over something like this.

Edit: I can’t believe how many of you are saying “Perseus used the mirror blah blah blah” but I don’t think her eyes would change from when she was a human so many people would know her eye color

Finally someone pointed this out. A few years ago I heard that people got medusa tattoos as a symbol of a SA survivor because Medusa was SAed and made the bad guy of her story and everyone misunderstood her.

Another sad thing was the fact that her best friend, which was in love with her, tried to protect from Poseidon, but got killed instead.
Ps she loved him too, but she admired Athena so much, that she turned him down to became Athena's priestess.

Medusa’s story is one of favorite myths :)
edit: after she was cursed into turning into a gorgon she ran away and accidentally turned the person she loves into stone, she lived with the guilt until Athena (who was her idol before she was cursed) sent Perseus to kill her. Then Athena wore her head on her shield (as seen on the Athena statue in the Parthenon museum.

Well in some stories it was a blessing so that she could protect herself and in others it was consensual and this was hugely disrespectful not saying what Athena did was justified
