Something similar happened to me once. I was working in Marketing but I was never ever trained. They would throw all employees to the lions. I could not, to save my life, get the survey started, the computer app would not approve. I gave the guy the 5 dollars from my pocket, in order to prevent him from causing a scene. He stayed around, did an actual survey and got paid 5 dollars more from my manager. I never allowed that to happen again, not even ONCE again. I always asked for help, whenever I needed help.
