I remember a video posed the “greatest drummer” question and Buddy Rich was my answer with some honorable mentions. I caught so much flak from that. One dude said “I was waiting for some idiot to say that” or some such drivel. I stand by my answer and I love coming across more proof from time to time

Many people may not realize it, but Buddy Rich was a 10th dan karate black belt.

Buddy & his big band were playing at the Mt Hood Festival of Jazz in the 80s & a friend & I were working as volunteers & had been invited to help backstage during/after the sets.

My friend & I were also both deeply into karate, so we were shadow-sparring in a safe area backstage, (letting off some youthful energy) when Buddy apparently walked offstage from his kit. We turned to see that he had been standing there, watching us - including our concluding bow of respect to one another...we smiled at him, & as we raised our hands to wave, he held his out, palm raised towards us, then brought both hands together, folded in a prayer-like posture, giving us the courtesy of a deep bow from the waist.

What else could we do but return the man the same bow?!

Buddy was also known for not shaking hands (his hands were his money-makers; it seemed totally reasonable/logical to me...) but his spontaneous bow of respect & acknowledgement was worth more than a handshake to us. What a moment to share with a true gentleman & the preeminent drumming talent of the 20th century & beyond!

I saw a Carpenters concert clip and I watched about three songs and heard drummer look like he was from Bachman Turner overdrive or something. I think he was wearing a suit. He did a drum solo that was reminiscing of this, but actually even better. Blew my mind.

Speed was his Buddy Rich's claim to fame, he is missing the feeling of many other drummers like Steve Gadd, Jeff Hamilton etc. It's my view that the feeling a drummer projects connects car more deeply with the listener than been wowed by speed.

Rich did unique stuff before other greats came along and learned from him. Brian Bennett is just as good coming up under the hi hat and I think does smoother single sticking rolls, plus Bennett played many different genres and spent some time in theatre orchestra pits sight-reading, but I've only ever seen Buddy Rich playing big band swing.

Oh that's the easy part, the most difficult part in percussion is, what sounds simple, what sounds easy, what sounds like everyone can do it, that's the most difficult part. In music simplicity is the most difficult thing.
