It's because at that time Tampa Bay was on the clock. SF had already turned in their pick and all that was left was for it to be announced. They don't start the clock at the point the pick is announced, they start it once the pick has been turned in & verified by the selecting team. Presumably, if they were going for the same player the next team could ask if it was player X before the clock starts in case they need to consider a trade offer, etc.

As a 49er fan, I get what the 49ers were trying to do. They were haunted by passing on Desean Jackson in 2008 twice, once in the first round, again in the second. The 49ers receivers lacked speed outside of Vernon Davis. The combination of those two things made the front office overvalue speed in their selection of a WR. Despite this, it was a lot of straight up bad luck in picking a player who didn't want to play.

I thought it was crazy he started on the practice squad with LaMichael James who was drafted after him, and didn't make the roster til Manningham and Kendall Hunter got hurt. And badly enough, at the beginning of his second season he was cut lol

A.J. Jenkins will produce this year. It will ither be him or Patton at the Z position, and what makes him such a weapon is that A.J. Jenkins is a speedster. He ran one of the fastest times at the columbine. With the way he as positively developed over the off-season, he will be able to create separation in most match ups and like Patton, he will be a deep threat.
