This game is bloody ridiculous, just got done playing a FUT World Cup game with my CONCACAF squad. Was fine for the most part minus a few moments here or there during the group matches (two wins and a tie) until I got to the knockout stages.
Round of 16, got to play against a lad who had Ronaldo, Balotelli, Daniel Sturridge, Pogba, Matuidi, Hazard, Jordi Alba, Kompany, Hummels and Lichensteiner with Neuer between the sticks... The match up is not the problem, I am more than prepared to match up with teams with star power even though they are rated 75. 
The gripe I have is for 1 I am already shorthanded yet somehow, someway EA/Fifa decide just to completely shaft me each and every way. I use the LB tip to control balls (always have, either that or LT) but to no avail... EVERY SINGLE touch was horrific, my passes were delayed and if they weren't delayed I was forced to take a touch to make my next pass.
I was at a loss for words... More importantly because I use Manual settings on everything excluding shooting (semi). Now I don't mind playing against assisted setting users just now when the game dicks me with ghastly awareness and control by my team. Talk about getting shafted... I was now at a triple advantage: Mediocre team against an all-star cast, delayed reactions/passes along with bad control of even ground passes against a guy who has fully assisted controls and can just 3/4 bar every pass and it gets where it needs to go by pointing it into a generalized direction. The lad only won 2-1, which if I weren't handicapped by the horrific on ball play I am more than certain it would have resulted in a win.

Sorry for the novel of a post, needed to vent and advocate that the tip/s you suggested do not necessarily always work.

It takes time to know what to do in scoring situations. When you've played a lot you'll figure out certain ways to approach certain chances. It does take time though, so stick at it :)

Terrible first touch system, EA has really outdone themselves in terms of terrible games. Absolutely dreadful.

LB was a way of taking a good first touch in Fifa 13 as well, it just wasn't needed. I think they may have reduced the effectiveness of a good first touch with LT
